I created Hua Roots, a card game and website, to help Chinese Singaporean youths feel closer to their heritage. Growing up, many of us celebrate Chinese New Year, eat mooncakes, or hear dialects, yet we don’t always know the stories behind them. This project turns that feeling of detachment into a chance for discovery. The card game uses trivia, stories, and challenges to teach youths about clans, surnames, and cultural fun facts. It is written in Chinese with Pinyin to keep it accessible. Alongside the game, there is a mobile-friendly website with a clan-sorting quiz and information on the history of Chinese surnames so users can explore at their own pace. Everything is designed to feel approachable, fun, and suitable for classroom use. More than just a game, Hua Roots is a starting point for meaningful conversations about who we are and where we come from.
